Stumped - Day 73
We bought 101 acres of woods, so we have and will have many stumps to address. In this video, I'm using the Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder to grind a pair of stumps in the middle of our perimeter trail.
The stump grinder has a 24" diameter grinding wheel containing 34 replaceable tungsten carbide teeth. Lower the 3pt to remove an inch or so of material when driving forward. On each pass, go deeper until you are a full 6" below the surface if necessary. If the bite is too much, you can notice the back of the grinder start to lean and/or the audible change of the tracker under too much load.
When looking at the back of the grinder you will notice that it rotates in a clockwise direction. When cutting, it's important to do the majority of the cutting in the 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock quadrant, with minimal cutting in the 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock quadrant. Because the cutting teeth are traveling down in the 3-6 quadrant, a lot of the cutting energy will be wasted in the downward compression of the wood fibers rather than slicing them away. Too much downward cutting will cause the grinder to bounce around.
For reference, I'm powering it with a Bad Boy 4035h tractor with a SpeeCo quick hitch attached. The WG24 is indeed quick hitch compatible.
Special thanks to @woodlandmills

Machines Rusting in Shipping Container - Day 65
Переглядів 47 тис.День тому
Two and a half months ago, we sold our house and shop. Our belongings went into a shipping container to sit protected (hopefully) until the shop is built. A common concern is that shipping containers hold moisture and cause rust and mold issues. Well, I have no signs of mold, but I won't know for sure until it's time to unpack this puzzle. Hopefully, that will happen two months from now. But ho...

What about a simple fiberglass rod or any rod mounted to the blade house somewhere. It can help show angle much better. Make some tape marks that makes sense as references to depth from something you can’t see around, like top of the triangle. As long as it’s removable and not higher than tractor fenders prob. Too tall would suck in the woods.

Just a thought concerning the viewability issue .. (a suggestions I saw others already made after I submitted this. * you could buy a cheap car license plate backup camera to mount on the back and LCD screen to mount on the dash. These operate off 12V so could be hooked to your battery. You could rig an inline on/off toggle switch for viewing on demand. * This way you could see what is going on behind at the flick of a switch using the LCD mounted on the dash.

Maybe a way to help with visibility for the stump grinder would be to buy an inexpensive ($75 - $100) wireless "rear view" camera and monitor and mount the camera on the rear of the tractor, near the Left fender, and place the monitor near the gauge cluster. Then you can keep your head straight forward, have less neck strain and and overall easier time. With the camera near the fender, it would be far enough away for the flying chips to not get damaged. I'm sure you will find other uses for the camera and monitor setup in the future too.
